Since 1927 Rotary exchange has made a difference in the lives of young people. Every year over 8,000 students exchange into one of over 80 countries. Many students who have never left home for more than a week or two will leave home for a year and experience something completely out of their comfort zone. On most exchanges, students do not know the language of the country which they are exchanging. Besides learning a new language, Rotary youth exchange (RYE) students learn about the country, culture, habits, traditions, and many more traits of that country. Students travel just before school starts in September and go through a whole school year in that country. No trips home on holidays, its the real deal. An exchange student goes through every aspect of that culture. Throughout the year, the RYE student will, on average, stay with 3-4 host families. This is to offer the students different chances to experience new things on their exchange. It has been often said to me that each exchange is different for each person, though I have heard little negative feedback about the program.
